Keeping traffic moving: Consultation on street works regime PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 14 October 2006

Revised Government proposals designed to help local authorities to reduce road congestion and disruption through better co-ordination of street works have been announced by Transport Minister Gillian Merron.

The draft Regulations are intended to strengthen the tools local authorities can use to carry out their network management duties under the Traffic Management Act 2004. They will have greater powers to restrict further street works following substantial road works or street works.

The proposals should allow local authorities to balance the needs of all road users, against the need to maintain essential services such as water, electricity and communications.

Gillian Merron said:

"We want local authorities to do all they can to co-ordinate works in their roads to keep traffic moving. This consultation is about the new regulatory framework and the tools to do so."

The Regulations are subject to a six-week consultation.
